Your Gift in Action

Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world. Very frequent climate extremes such as cyclones or long periods of drought destroy crops and thus exacerbate people's poverty. Oxfam's local partners distribute goats to people in extreme poverty so that they can establish a breeding programme. In this way, families create new livelihoods that provide a secure income even in emergency situations. One person from each participating village community is trained in animal care and medicine to keep the herds healthy and pass on the knowledge.

Delfina Bernado has had her own small herd since 2010. "I originally got three goats, and now I already have six," she reports. Delfina sells the offspring on the market. From the proceeds, the single mother was able to build a new hut for herself and her two children.
