The population of small Southeast Asian state Timor-Leste is very young on average. In addition to the effects of the climate crisis, the country also suffers from poverty and societal inequalities. There is a big difference to the urban areas of the country. This holds a great challenge for the economic development of the country.

Agriculture is an important economic sector. 75% of the population live in rural areas and depend on their small farms, which are irrigated with rainwater. Often, families produce just enough to survive. Small amounts of surplus crops or products, such as eggs, are sold at local markets.

Oxfam works locally to promote a diverse economy and support the livelihoods of small farmers. Youth, women, people with disabilities, farmers, and people in communities are brought together to promote political participation and preserve everyone's rights.
